Pulsation Dampeners

Griffco pulsation dampeners are designed to enhance the performance of the chemical feed systems by reducing harmful shock waves and delivering continuous chemical dosage at the injection point.

Sizes and Pressure Ratings

1/2″, 3/4”, 1″, and 2″ connections (NPT, BSPT, Union, Flange, Socket)
Plastic bodies: 150 psi (10 bar) max. Metal bodies: 10 to 1,000 psi (0.7 to 69 bar).

Why Chemical Feed Systems Need Pulsation Dampeners

Metering pumps deliver flow in pulses — each stroke fires a burst several times the average rate, then a lull. A Griffco pulsation dampener evens it out: a gas cushion behind the diaphragm absorbs the excess energy on the pump’s discharge stroke and gives it back as the pump refills, filling the trough of the curve. That flattens the pulsation wave into smooth, centrifugal-like flow — the steady delivery of a centrifugal pump with the precision of a metering pump.

That protects the whole feed system:

  • Accurate dosing — pulses over- and under-dose at the injection point; steady flow holds the dose you set (critical where the dose is the product: chlorine, coagulant, pH).
  • Reliable readings — meters and gauges can’t read a pulsing line; dampened flow gives usable data and longer instrument life.
  • Less fatigue and water hammer — spikes crack fittings and cause leaks; smoothing them extends system life and cuts chemical-exposure risk.
  • Lower peak pressure — mitigating the spikes protects every downstream component.

Inlet Stabilizers

The suction side needs protection too. Griffco inlet stabilizers reduce inlet water hammer and/or excess head pressure above the pump inlet rating, acceleration head losses in suction lift applications, and inlet cavitation — helping the pump fill completely on every stroke.

Sizing Your Dampener

An undersized dampener won’t absorb the pulse, and an oversized one adds cost for no benefit. Sizing depends on the pump’s displacement per stroke, stroke rate, line size and length, and operating pressure.

Use the free Griffco Pulsation Dampener Sizing Calculator (also available in metric). Enter your pump and piping details and the results are emailed to you.

Charging and Maintenance

Griffco dampeners use a gas pre-charge behind the diaphragm. A gauge shows the charge pressure at a glance. Check the charge regularly and recharge through the charging valve as described in the installation and operation manual. Dampeners may be charged with either compressed air or nitrogen. A pulsation dampener charging kit and a filling and testing kit are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should the dampener be installed?

On the pump discharge, as close to the pump as practical, and no more than 10 pipe diameters of the discharge line away from the pump. Follow the IOM manual for orientation and piping.

What if I need higher pressure or a more aggressive chemical?

Griffco pulsation dampeners are rated to 1,000 psi (69 bar). For duties above that, or for chemistries and constructions outside the materials listed above, Griffco offers the Fox S.r.l. line. Griffco is an exclusive partner for the Fox product line — pulsation dampeners and suction stabilizers spanning eight technology families, from 145 psi (10 bar) to 20,000 psi (1,379 bar), manufactured under an ISO 9001 certified quality system.

The Fox range covers membrane, bladder, in-line and direct-contact designs for oil and gas, chemical processing and high-pressure dosing applications. Griffco supports Fox globally — contact us or your local distributor and we will route your application to the right technology.
